Why is a dedicated domiciliary dental service required?
Research has shown that home-bound, ill and recently hospitalised individuals are at a higher risk of Oral Health diseases (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network). Such diseases are not only confined to common dental decay and gum disease but, worryingly, the incidence of Oral Cancer in elderly patients is also on the increase (ISD Scotland). Such diseases are escaping early detection due to difficulties in patients accessing primary care i.e. regular check-ups. As diseases progress, the patients quality of life decreases and, as is also known, any deterioration in Oral Health can form a vicious cycle of affecting general health as well (British Dental Health Foundation) due to various factors from spreading bacteria to even malnutrition.
What does PDO Dental offer?
PDO HomeHealth’s dedicated dental service aims to help the patients above via a variety of means. Firstly, prevention is the key with regular oral health check ups, which can be undertaken with ease inside the home or care environment. If any disease is detected, simple treatments can also be performed at the patients address to help (such as simple fillings, dentures etc). Any potentially cancerous lesions can also be detected and referred to secondary care to provide better patient outcomes.
Why is PDO Dental better than a conventional high street dentist?
Although many patients may have or had a conventional ‘high street’ dentist, their care models are not always set-up to address the specific needs of patients confined to care or in their home. For example, response times may be non-existent or slower as high street dentists are busy treating other patients within their clinics. Many high street dentists are not able to travel quickly or regularly to see patients at home or at a care setting. Furthermore, not all dentists have the equipment and/or skills which are required in a domiciliary environment. This can often mean that any care provided, may at best be a compromise. Since PDO HomeHealth concentrates only on these type of patients, we pride ourselves in attending to the urgent needs within the required time frame AND a quality of service to match. We provide regular follow-ups to ensure that none of our patients are lost along the way, even if they happen to go in and out of hospital for other medical matters.
